We visited Dalwhinnie Distillery, which sits between Edinburgh and Inverness as you head north.
It’s the highest-altitude distillery in the Highlands.

Features of the Distillery
Founded in 1897, it was originally named Strathspey, but was later renamed Dalwhinnie.
It’s used in the blends Black & White and Royal Household.
At 326 meters, it’s the second-highest distillery in Scotland (the highest is Braeval Distillery).
The flavor is soft and mild — some describe it as being like a sunny spot.
Getting There / Access
Take the train from Edinburgh bound for Inverness, get off at Dalwhinnie station, and it’s about a 20-minute walk from there.

The Distillery’s Exterior
Coming out onto the road from the station, we could get there on a single straight road.
There was nothing around — a place rich in nature.
The Tour We Joined
First we heard about the distillery’s history and characteristics, then we toured the inside.
We enjoyed a tasting of three kinds paired with chocolate.

Shop and Bar
There’s a bar at the back of the shop.
The chocolate here is apparently delicious, and you can enjoy chocolate and whisky together.
Summary
Since it’s not too far from the station, it’s a great place to stop by on the way from Edinburgh to Inverness.
It was a tour that made me appreciate all over again just how good a chocolate-and-whisky pairing can be.
