For whisky lovers, one Edinburgh sightseeing spot I really recommend is the Whisky Experience.

You can enjoy the history of whisky and taste Scotch whiskies from various regions.

We had an absolutely fantastic time visiting as many as 50 distilleries in Scotland, but getting around by public transport was quite a challenge and took a lot of time.

For anyone who wants to experience the appeal of whisky quickly and easily, this Whisky Experience is the way to go.

We enjoyed one tour and a meal here, so let me share what it was like.

What is the Whisky Experience?

You can enjoy Scotland’s whiskies all in this one place.

It’s located in the center of Edinburgh, so it’s easy to drop by and enjoy some whisky.

There’s a shop where you can buy whisky, chocolate, and more, and there’s also a restaurant where you can enjoy whisky together with a meal.

Location of the Whisky Experience

It’s located right next to Edinburgh Castle.

Edinburgh Castle sits quite high up on a hill, and getting there involves a fair number of slopes and, depending on the route, plenty of stairs. There are also lots of souvenir shops in the area and plenty of things to see.

Book Online or On-Site

During our stay in Edinburgh, we went to the Whisky Experience venue about three times.

When you go in, there’s a line for purchases and a line for tour reception.

We bought our tickets on-site.

What the Tour We Joined Was Like

There are several tours to choose from.

You can also check the tour times being held on their website.

We didn’t do all of them, so I can’t tell you the differences, but we joined the Gold Tour.

Since we went on January 1st, the tours available were also limited.

The Gold Tour was about £37 per person.

Along with a wonderful presentation, they introduced the history of whisky and the differences between regions, there was a whisky tasting partway through, and at the end we got to carefully taste four different varieties.

Off to a Restaurant Called Amber

I recommend making a reservation for the restaurant.

We had booked when we visited the day before, but it felt a little like “hmm, is this reservation really okay?” lol — since we arrived early, they kindly moved us to an earlier time.

It seems there are also times when you can get in for just the bar.

The food was really delicious too.

There were so many kinds of whisky that choosing was a real dilemma, but they picked out for us a whisky that we hadn’t been able to try elsewhere.

Souvenir Corner

There’s a shop right at the entrance.

It really had all kinds of whisky — just looking around was a fun experience.

We bought some whisky chocolate and other bits.

Summary

We happened to stay in Edinburgh for about four days, so we ended up dropping by three of them, lol.

Even just enjoying the shop was great fun, with so many different whiskies to look at.

That said, I can’t say whether the prices are cheap, so be sure to check them carefully.

And do try to enjoy the tours and the restaurant too.
