Our second stop on Islay was a visit to Bunnahabhain Distillery.
It’s in the north of Islay, and since you can’t get there by bus, we went by taxi.
Here’s a look at everything from the tour to the tasting.

Features of the Distillery
Founded in 1881.
It’s 4 km north of Port Askaig harbor, the northern gateway of Islay.
Bunnahabhain is the home distillery of Black Bottle, which blends malt whiskies from all over Islay.
Bunnahabhain is the lightest of the Islay malts, but with the recent Islay malt boom, it began producing smoky malt from the late 1990s.
It now produces about 200,000 liters of smoky Bunnahabhain a year.
It has six Oregon pine washbacks, and the pot stills are a distinctive onion shape — there are currently four.
Location / Access
Five minutes by taxi from Port Askaig.
We were staying in Bowmore, so we went by taxi from Bowmore.
We didn’t know where or how to call, so we had the Caol Ila distillery — which we’d visited the day before — make the call for us.
We got a business card and from there exchanged messages, asking a few times.

The Tour We Joined and Price
We joined the Production Tour at £15 per person (2,760 yen).
We enjoyed a distillery tour with a tasting at the end.
The Distillery’s Exterior
It was a single road to the distillery by taxi.
It’s along the coast with the Isle of Jura visible, and the shop & visitor center is out front.
Walking a little from the shop, there was the cool BUNNAHABHAIN lettering and building.
A tasting while looking at the sea was the most wonderful feeling.

Inside the Distillery
The inside of the distillery was like this.
The Final Tasting
We did the tasting after returning to the shop.
We had two kinds.
・Bunnahabhain Stiùireadair
・Bunnahabhain Tòiteach a Dhà
Combined with the atmosphere, we enjoyed them immensely.

Shop and Bar
The shop itself isn’t that big, but it was a really wild and cool space.
There were lots of mini bottles too.
While we browsed for a while, they let us do a tasting too.
Summary
Even within Islay, it’s a place that’s hard to reach without a taxi or rental car, but it was a cool space, and a tasting while looking at the sea made it a really soothing distillery.
It was a time where we could fully savor the kind of fun you only get by coming in person.
