We visited Talisker Distillery on the Isle of Skye.
We rented a car for the first time on this trip to get to Skye.
We had our biggest bit of car trouble of the whole trip (lol), but we managed to make it back safely.
Since the two of us wanted to drink on-site, we stayed at accommodation near the distillery and joined the tour.
As you’d expect from Talisker, it’s by no means close to any big city, yet lots of people had gathered.
Here’s a look at our visit.

Features of the Distillery
Talisker Distillery was established on the Isle of Skye in 1830.
Skye is called the Misty Isle, and it rains frequently.
Until 1928, Irish-style triple distillation was carried out, which is why, against two wash stills, three spirit stills are installed.
Besides single malt, it supplies blending malt to Johnnie Walker and others.
Another feature is that Talisker’s wash stills have a U-shaped lyne arm through which the vapor flows, and heavy components are returned to the pot still by a purifier at the end of this U-bend.
By repeating vaporization and liquefaction, this produces a cleaner low-wines spirit.
Location/ Access
You can apparently get to Skye by bus too, but it takes quite a while, so we went by rental car.
It also seems to take more than 30 minutes even from the main town of Portree.

The Distillery’s Exterior
It stood grandly in a small town.
It was a cool, simple white building.

There were more than 10 people at the tasting too, and it was a fun time sharing everyone’s preferences.

Shop and Bar
Both the shop and the bar were really cool.
It happened to be just before Christmas, so they were offering a welcome drink and discounts on purchases.
Summary
There were some mishaps and it was a nerve-racking trip, but we made it to the Talisker Distillery we’d wanted to visit, and we were thoroughly satisfied.
As you’d expect from being owned by Diageo, the tour content was lavish, and we thought it was impressive.
If only we’d had more time, I really would have loved to explore Skye at a leisurely pace.
