Distillery in Scotland

We joined a tasting tour at The Macallan Distillery in Speyside.

It was a little pricey and we almost hesitated, but we took the plunge and went.

It seems to have been renovated a while back, and it was such a hotel-like space that we found ourselves doubting whether whisky was really made here.

Here’s a look at our tasting tour.

Features of the Distillery

Founded in 1824, and today Suntory owns 25% of the shares.

It’s the number-three selling single malt, and the number-one imported single malt in Japan.

For Macallan’s sherry casks, they go directly to Spain, select the timber, and have local cooperages assemble the casks.

It has 36 pot stills in total — among the largest in Scotland.

The building feels just like a hotel, and the flavor is rich and deep.

Getting There / Access

We went by taxi from BenRiach Distillery.

The Distillery’s Exterior

“This is a distillery?!” — we were amazed.

As we walked up, hotel-like automatic doors opened and let us in.

The Tour We Joined

The tour we were able to book was a tasting tour.

We just checked in at the reception by the entrance, and when it was time, headed up to the tasting area.

Until then, we looked at the past whiskies displayed all across the walls and browsed the shop.

It was a very stylish seat, and we did the tasting while looking at the glass-walled view of the whisky distillery and listening to a sharply dressed gentleman in a suit.

Shop and Restaurant

The shop was in a spacious area too.

There was a restaurant at the back, but it was fully booked.

A dessert(?) inspired by the “angels’ share” seems to be famous, and it was fun to see the “bubbles” floating up toward the ceiling.

Summary

Of the 50 distilleries we visited, this was the most lavish.

It didn’t feel much like a distillery, but for anyone who wants to soak up a slightly luxurious atmosphere, this is a distillery I’d recommend.
