Ardnahoe Distillery is a new distillery on Islay, so the facilities were really lovely too.
It had only just been built in 2018, and the whisky hasn’t been bottled yet, but at the end of the distillery tour we could do a tasting.
The impression was that the whisky is still young, but it’s a distillery whose future whiskies I’m looking forward to.
Here’s a look at our visit.

Features of the Distillery
Established in 2018, it’s on the way from Caol Ila to Bunnahabhain, with the Sound of Islay and the Isle of Jura visible below.
Production is 1 million liters a year, and it’s a distillery owned by a bottler.
The mashing water comes from the Ardnahoe spring.
It has two lantern-type stills; the casks are 70% bourbon, 20% oloroso sherry, and 10% other.
Since it has to be matured for at least three years, the single malt will hit the market a little further down the line.
Location / Access
This is another distillery you can only reach by taxi.
We went after Bowmore Distillery, so we booked a taxi in advance.

The Distillery’s Exterior
The location looks out over the Isle of Jura and the scenery was really beautiful.
There’s a cafe inside, and if you go outside from that cafe, you can see the Ardnahoe lettering on the wall.
The Tour We Joined
We joined a tour called The Spirit of Ardnahoe, £12 per person (about 2,300 yen).
We got to tour the distillery and drink whisky that isn’t on sale yet.
The waiting room at the start of the tour is really cute. There were photos of the distillery being built and so on.
A copper mash tun. The leftover malt gets reused.
Wooden washbacks.
The stills had among the longest lyne arms we’d seen. These long arms apparently produce a smooth whisky.

Tasting
The tasting was in a cool-looking room.We had it with a cask as our table.
Shop and Bar
There were lots of the bottler’s whiskies lined up.
There were whiskies from various regions too, and if you asked the staff, they’d let you taste them.
At the back there was a really lovely cafe. Relaxing here is a good option too.

Summary
The shop staff were very kind, talked with us a lot, and let us taste whiskies too.
The whisky is still a distillery for the future, so I’m really looking forward to the day we can find it in Japan.
