We joined the tour at BenRiach Distillery in Speyside.

We hadn’t had it much in Japan, but at the end of the distillery tour we enjoyed some whisky and a cocktail.

Here’s a look at our visit.

Features of the Distillery

It’s next to Longmorn Distillery and once shared the same parent company, but it’s now owned by a different company.

Founded in 1898 by John Duff, it closed after two years, then reopened in 1965 after merging with The Glenlivet company.

Today it’s owned by Brown-Forman.

It has four slim, straight-head pot stills. At one time it did triple distillation.

It does a little floor malting, mashing with 10% peated malt and 90% non-peated malt.

Unusually for Speyside, it’s smoky and peaty.

About 10 minutes by bus from Elgin, you’ll start to see the big BenRiach lettering.

We were in Aberlour, so we took the Elgin-bound bus.

We could see the large BenRiach lettering along the road.

Walking a little way from the parking lot, we reached the visitor center.

We don’t have many photos, but after touring a bit of the distillery, we did a tasting.

BenRiach is next to Longmorn Distillery, and apparently they share some warehousing for casks.

There’s a barley field next door, and apparently they only floor-malt what’s harvested in spring.

They also taught us how to make a cocktail, which was fun.

The shop was a very small space.

There was quite a bit of merchandise on the shelves.

Even in Speyside, an area with so many distilleries, we could feel its individuality, and it was really enjoyable.

Places that teach you how to make a cocktail are rare too, so that was fun.
