Glengoyne Distillery is about an hour from Glasgow.

Honestly, I didn’t know Glengoyne Distillery until we went to Scotland, but personally it was a distillery I newly discovered.

We stayed near Glasgow Airport, and after visiting Auchentoshan Distillery, went by taxi.

At the end of the tour, we could even enjoy a chocolate pairing.

Here we introduce its features and the recommended whiskies the distillery served in the tasting.

Features of Glengoyne Distillery

Glengoyne Distillery, whose name means “wild geese” in Gaelic.

It’s located on the border with the Lowlands, but it’s a Highland distillery.

Founded in 1833, it was one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland until its expansion in 1967; it now has one wash still and two spirit stills.

It used to use the English Golden Promise variety for its mash, and now uses the Scottish Concerto variety.

It uses only non-peated malt, and for maturation one-third is sherry casks and the rest refill casks.

Access to Glengoyne Distillery

You can get to Glengoyne Distillery from central Glasgow in about an hour by bus.

Taking the X10 to Balfron from Buchanan Bus Station is a convenient way to go.

We took this bus on the way back.

Distillery Hours / Booking a Tour

The distillery is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Please check the website.

I’d recommend always booking the tour in advance.

When you arrive, check in at the building nearest the front, and when it’s time, go to the nearby room where the tour starts.

The Tour We Joined and Price

The tour we joined this time was the Collection Tour and Tasting, a 90-minute tour at £30 per person.

It included a distillery tour and, at the end, a tasting with a chocolate pairing.

There are also cheaper tours and tasting-only tours.

You can choose from the tours page on the website.

The Distillery’s Exterior

You can reach Glengoyne Distillery from Glasgow, but there were hardly any buildings around the distillery.
Still, the atmosphere of the building that suddenly appeared was really cute.

I really loved the feel of photographing the building from across the road.

Tour Details

We had time before it started, so we were leisurely looking around the shop — and I’d also mistaken the time…
The guide came all the way to the shop to fetch us…!!

First, in a stylish room, we heard about the distillery’s history and features.

From there they showed us around inside the distillery.

Tasting

We experienced the chocolate pairing at a very stylish bar.

The Shop

There’s a shop at the back, and inside it’s very spacious, with lots of whiskies and cute merchandise.

There were hand-fills too, and when we asked the staff, they let us do various tastings as well.

Summary

We didn’t know much about Glengoyne Distillery, but when we went, it was a homey space, and the whisky experience with a chocolate pairing was really fun.

If you get a chance to go to Glasgow, please do stop by.
