Our seventh stop on Islay was Bruichladdich Distillery.
I personally love the color of the bottles and used to drink it often.
The building’s atmosphere was the same as the bottles and really cute.
Bruichladdich is also famous for making The Botanist gin, and we were moved to be able to see that production process too.
Also, this time we joined two tours, including a tour where you can drink whisky from the cask.

Features of the Distillery
Founded in 1881. The distillery had been closed since 1994, but reopened in the spring of 2001.
It started growing barley in contract with Islay farmers.
The malt needed for Bruichladdich’s mash is about 2,800 tons a year, of which two-fifths is Islay-grown.
There are various barley varieties and separate mashes for each, and everything from barley procurement to bottling can be done on Islay.
The water used for reducing and bottling is the mashing water (most distilleries use purified water).
The mash tun is traditional cast iron, with no lid.
It makes three main types of whisky.
The phenol levels are: Bruichladdich 3–5, Port Charlotte 30–40, and Octomore 80–300.
Location / Access
You can get there by bus from Bowmore.
There aren’t a lot of buses, so we arrived early and waited.
It was raining, and while we waited they opened up before opening time.
We were moved the whole time by the kindness of the people on Islay.

Whichever angle you cut, it was a cutely designed building.
The Tours We Joined and Prices
The first tour we joined was the Guided Distillery Tour (£15 per person), a distillery tour.
The rare lidless mash tun. Apparently it doesn’t cause any particular trouble to be open.
The stills for whisky and gin stood side by side.
For the final tasting, we had three kinds.

The Second Tour We Joined
After the distillery tour, we did the Warehouse Tasting Experience, where you can drink whisky straight from the cask in the cask warehouse.
It’s £35 per person, which isn’t cheap, but it was a great experience you can only have at the distillery.
We even got to try pouring straight from the cask into a glass, and could savor the cask strength.
Shop and Bar
There’s a bar counter next to the shop, where we could do the post-tour tasting, and they also let us try a little of some other things we were curious about.

Summary
This was personally one of the distilleries I’d wanted to visit, so we splurged and joined two tours.
We got to have experiences unique to the distillery, so we were thoroughly satisfied.
