We visited Glen Moray Distillery, in the town of Elgin at the gateway to the Speyside area.
We took the 6:30 a.m. ferry from the Orkney Islands, went by bus to Inverness, then by train to the town of Elgin, and joined the 3:30 p.m. tour — the biggest single journey of this whole trip.
Thanks to being acquired by a French company, it’s a distillery where you can enjoy whisky made in all sorts of wine casks and more.

Features of the Distillery
Founded in 1897, built by converting a brewery.
It has nine pot stills in total.
The mashing water comes from the River Lossie.
In 2008 it was acquired by La Martiniquaise, becoming a French-owned distillery.
It’s used as the malt for Label 5, popular within France.
Location / Access
It’s a bit far to walk from Elgin station, but you can get there in about a 30-minute walk.
Taking the bus gets you a little closer.

The Distillery’s Exterior
Walking through the town, it appears.
Head down the slope and walk a little, and the shop is on the right.
The Tour We Joined
What stood out was the wide variety of casks.
As people at various distilleries said, making whisky takes both time and money, so having a sponsoring company is what makes it possible to make delicious whisky.
It’s precisely because a French company is involved that you can enjoy the whiskies made here.
It was a standing tasting, but since it was a whisky we hadn’t had much, and it was different from the impression we had when we bought and drank another Glen Moray elsewhere in Scotland on the way, it tasted really delicious.
We happened to hit it off with a Japanese visitor who was on a different tour, and it was a hurried but fun tasting.

Summary
It’s at the gateway to Speyside, where distilleries are concentrated, so it’s a very easy distillery to reach.
Even within Speyside, it uses many types of casks and makes a distinctive whisky, so please do go and visit.
