Aberlour Distillery is about a 30-minute bus ride from Elgin.
We were staying in the town of Aberlour, so we walked to the distillery.
The distillery interior was under renovation and we couldn’t go in, but we joined the tasting tour, so here’s a look at how it went.

Features of the Distillery
Founded in 1826, with a stainless-steel mash tun. It has four straight-type pot stills.
The current building was built after a fire in 1879.
Aberlour is among the top 10 best-selling single malts.
The single malts Pernod Ricard focuses on are The Glenlivet and Aberlour.
Its signature whisky is the Double Cask Matured, aged in two cask types — sherry and bourbon.

The Distillery’s Exterior

It was a cute building, like a wizard’s house.
Right at the entrance were the shop and the tasting room.
The Tour We Joined
As of 2023, unfortunately the interior was under renovation and we couldn’t tour it.
This time we just enjoyed the tasting tour.

Every one was truly delicious and moving.
What was really great was that before the tasting, we got to smell aroma samples and experience the scents of whisky.
Even if someone asks “what does whisky smell like?” it’s hard to say, but by smelling similar aromas, you go “maybe it’s close to this scent!” and picture it more clearly — and I feel like I could pick up on it a bit better in the tasting afterward.

The Shop
The shop isn’t that big either.
A new product was going on sale from the weekend, right when we visited — but we ended up not being able to go.
Even if you haven’t booked a tour, popping in to browse the shop is worth it too.
Summary
Aberlour has a very rich, fruity flavor, and it was a whisky that personally left a strong impression on me.
You can’t tour it yet, but even just the tasting is fun, so it’s a distillery I’d really love you to stop by.
