Leaving Islay behind, we went from there by ferry and bus to the town of Campbeltown.
In Campbeltown, we visited Springbank Distillery, Glengyle Distillery, and Glen Scotia Distillery.
Campbeltown, which once had many distilleries, now has just three.
First, here’s a look at our visit to Springbank Distillery.

Features of the Distillery
Founded in 1828, it’s one of the few independently owned distilleries.
The mashing water comes from Crosshill Loch on the hill behind, and this water is also used by the local cheese factory.
Springbank has bottling facilities, and the whiskies from various distilleries that the bottler Cadenhead’s buys up are bottled here too.
It’s the only distillery that covers all of its malt with floor malting.
By varying the malt’s peat level and distillation method, it makes three whiskies: Longrow (50 ppm), Springbank (12 to 15 ppm), and Hazelburn (0 ppm).
The still house has one wash still and two spirit stills — three in total.
Longrow is distilled twice, Springbank is distilled 2.5 times, distilling part of the low wines three times, and Hazelburn is distilled three times.
Springbank makes up 70% of total production, Hazelburn 20%, and Longrow 10%.
Location/ Access
It’s in the center of the town of Campbeltown.
We went by ferry about two hours from Port Ellen on Islay to Kennacraig, then by bus about one hour to Campbeltown.
There also seems to be a bus from Glasgow, about four hours.

The Distillery’s Exterior
The entrance is a little way in off the street.
Right at the entrance is the shop.
The tour starts from this entrance.
The Tour We Joined
We joined the Springbank Tour.
It was £12 per person (about 2,200 yen), and the tour included a tasting and a bottle.
Like some of the Islay distilleries, here too we could see floor malting. And the mill.
They also explained the kiln building and the equipment connecting to the outside.

The Final Tasting
After the tour, you can choose the whisky you drink.
And we received a cute bottle.
Shop and Bar
The shop had whiskies including hand-fills.
It’s not that big, but it had a cool atmosphere.
If you ask, they’ll let you taste the hand-fills too.

Summary
It’s one of the precious distilleries remaining in Campbeltown, which once had many.
It was a distillery where you can savor Springbank’s three whiskies while feeling that history.
