From Thurso, the northernmost town, we took a ferry to the Orkney Islands — an hour and a half.
The nature-rich Orkney Islands have two distilleries, and we visited them in one day.
Here’s a look at our visit to Highland Park Distillery, which we went to in the morning.

Features of the Distillery
It’s Scotland’s northernmost distillery, founded in 1798.
From the 8th century onward, the Orkney Islands were ruled by the Vikings for several hundred years.
It was named Highland Park because it sat on high ground called High Park.
It’s a distillery that still does floor malting today, and it cuts its peat from its own dedicated bog.
The malt is dried for 18 hours, with coke used for the remaining time.
It has four stills, and is characterized by an aromatic, smoky flavor.
Getting There / Access
The distillery is in the town of Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands.
From the gateway, the ferry terminal at Stromness, it’s about 30 minutes by bus.
If you tell the bus driver you want to go to Highland Park Distillery, they’ll drop you off right in front of it.

The Distillery’s Exterior
The stone-brick feel was cool, and it somehow reminded me of Harry Potter!
I kept saying that to myself, lol
Inside was a cool building with a cohesive look too.
The Tour We Joined
First we watched a cool video, and got to see floor malting for the first time in a while.
We toured the kiln building that uses peat!
In the Orkney Islands, the angels’ share is apparently only about 1% per year.
Even though the location isn’t that different from the town of Thurso, this difference is really amazing!
We had a relaxed tasting in a lovely tasting room with the warmth of wood.

The Shop
The shop had a stylish, wall-display style!
There’s no bar or the like, but we could take our time looking at souvenirs.
Summary
The hardest part of this two-month trip was getting to the Orkney Islands.
The ferries only run in the early morning and at night, so there were time constraints too.
But the air was really good, and although we went in winter, it was such a lovely place that it made us want to go in summer as well.
