Our fifth stop on Islay was Kilchoman Distillery.
The grounds of Kilchoman Distillery, which starts from a farm, were really vast.
There’s no bus, so we went by taxi.
There was a booking mishap too, but they handled it kindly, and we had a good time.
Personally, I caught a cold and unfortunately couldn’t enjoy the whisky on-site, but here’s a look at our visit.

Features of the Distillery
Rockside Farm on the west side of the Rhinns peninsula once had a summer palace, and it’s a place with a distinguished heritage.
The distillery was built by converting the old farm buildings on this land. It doesn’t face the sea, and as a distillery it’s the smallest on Islay, with a cafe and shop attached.
Founded in June 2005, by Anthony Wills and Mark French.
It does floor malting with barley from Rockside Farm, covering 40% of its malt.
It also has bottling facilities, and is the only distillery that can do everything from barley growing → malting → mashing → fermentation → distillation → maturation → bottling.
Location / Access
We were staying in the town of Port Ellen, so we went from there by taxi.
Bowmore is closer, so I’d recommend it as a base to stay.
Positionally, it’s closer from the town of Bruichladdich, but that makes the other distilleries a little harder to reach.

The Distillery’s Exterior
Walking in about 5 minutes from the entrance, there’s the parking lot, visitor center, and shop.
At the end of the visit, we met a cat too.
The Tour We Joined
Even though payment showed as completed here, the booking apparently hadn’t gone through properly, so we joined a different tour than booked.
This time too it was a tour while drinking.
We were surprised by the bottle placed inside the malt! lol

Shop and Bar
The shop was very spacious too, with a bar and cafe.
It was a little early, so we relaxed at the cafe.
Summary
It’s a place that’s a little hard to reach by bus, but it’s a precious distillery where you can see everything from floor malting to cask maturation.
There’s a cafe too, so it’s a distillery where you can spend a relaxed time.
