Laphroaig Distillery Tour Review[photos]islay-Scotland

Distillery in Scotland

Our sixth stop on Islay was Laphroaig Distillery, known as the king of Islay for its strong peat and addictive whisky.

At Laphroaig too, we could see floor malting and try the work of adding peat, and had a really fun experience.

In the tasting, we got to drink batches you can’t easily find.

Here’s a look at the distillery visit.

Features of the Distillery

Three kilometers east of Port Ellen harbor, facing an inlet, it was built by the Johnston brothers in 1815.

It does floor malting, spreading barley on a concrete floor and turning it with wooden shovels or machinery so it germinates evenly.

For maturation it uses only first-fill bourbon casks (a favorite of Prince Charles).

The flavor has a medicinal, iodine-like aroma, oily and rich, briny — it’s called the king of Islay malts.

Locaiton / Access

It’s a bit of a walk, but you can walk to Laphroaig Distillery from the town of Port Ellen.

The Distillery’s Exterior

A white, simple exterior.
On the sea-facing wall near the visitor center (shop) there’s the Laphroaig lettering.

The Tour We Joined

We joined the Experience Tour (Winter Schedule, Oct–Feb), £18 per person (about 3,500 yen).

You can see floor malting.

They let us try the work of adding peat too.

Tasting

For the final tasting on the tour, we could choose three from several batch whiskies and other whiskies.

Drivers (and others) could take it home, or enjoy drinking it on the spot.

Shop, Bar, and Museum

We checked in for the tour at the shop.

There’s a bar at the back-left of the shop, and depending on the tour you can do a tasting flight here.

There’s a museum at the back-right of the shop, which we looked at until the tour.
The tour started from the back of the museum.

Summary

Being able to do floor malting and even try adding peat made it a very memorable distillery visit.

You can’t easily drink the batches, so it was a lot of fun to experience precisely because we went to the distillery.
