Old Pulteney Distillery, in the town of Wick, can be reached from Thurso, the northernmost town.
It looked far, and I thought about giving up on it many times, but I figured you don’t get chances like this, so I pushed myself to go.
It was a whisky we hadn’t had much before, so it was a really good experience.
Here’s a look at our visit.

Features of the Distillery
It’s a distillery in Wick at the northern tip of the island of Britain, where herring fishing thrived.
For that reason, the herring is the distillery’s symbol.
Founded in 1826, it was a key malt for Ballantine’s.
It didn’t used to sell a single malt, but it’s made today.
The pot stills are gourd-shaped, and the distillery supplies the local area with heating steam using its own warm wastewater, and with electricity from power-generating equipment that uses waste materials.
In 1995 it was renovated and a visitor center opened.

Getting There / Access
You can get there from Thurso, the northernmost town, in about 30 minutes by bus or train.
We went by bus, and when we said we wanted to go to the distillery, they dropped us off on the closest road.
After the distillery tour, they even told us where to eat in central Wick.

The Distillery’s Exterior
It was a building that blended into a town like a warehouse district.
We arrived too early and puzzled a bit over the entrance, but inside a large space opened up.
The Tour We Joined
The most striking thing at Pulteney Distillery was the round stills.
Also, you could really tell how much the guide loved whisky — she said she was envious that in the Orkney Islands,
where we were headed next, the angels’ share is only 1%! lol
(At distilleries like Pulteney it’s about 2%.)
