We visited The Balvenie Distillery, located in Dufftown, the town said to be the home of whisky.
There was only one seat left on the day we wanted to book, and when we asked if there was any way to fit in one more person, we got a polite reply that they couldn’t add spots because of how the tour works.
But at the last minute a cancellation came up, and the two of us were able to join after all.
Once we got there, we completely understood why.
The distillery tour ran a long two hours, but it was so lavish and packed that it felt like it was over in no time.

Features of the Distillery
The Balvenie is the sister distillery of Glenfiddich, established in 1892.
The Balvenie still does floor malting to this day, and it currently has 11 stills.
Its flavor is honey-like and rich, and it also goes into the blended whisky Monkey Shoulder.
-location / Access
It’s about a 30-minute walk from the town of Dufftown.
If you’re lucky enough to catch a bus, that might be a good option too.

The Distillery’s Exterior
There’s a distillery called Kininvie right alongside it, making for a very large site.
We couldn’t tell which building was the visitor center and got lost.
There’s a pedestrian path, so use that as your landmark.
The Tour We Joined
For this tour, I really think the best thing is to experience it for yourself.
I’ll keep how it works a secret on purpose, but the guide was truly unique and the tour was wonderfully rich in content.

The Final Tasting
We got to do plenty of tasting.Everything was delicious.
Shop and Bar
There’s a shop in the visitor center.
It’s not big, but it had some rare whiskies.

“What on earth do you do for two whole hours?!” — this is a tour I’d love you to join with that kind of excitement.
If you tell them “I saw the blog of the Japanese couple who went to 50 distilleries,” and it’s the same guide, they’ll probably remember us!
